HTTP

What is HTTP?

HTTP stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol and describes the application or program used by web browsers when asking a web server for information. HTTPS is the secured or encrypted version of HTTP, the “S” at the end meaning “secure”.

How does HTTP work?

When a user types https://themarketer.com into their browser, a domain name system (DNS) helps it reach out to theMarketer’s web server and return the page the user requested using plain text.

Why is HTTPS important?

In the process described earlier, the information sent over regular HTTP is broken into bits of data that can be easily accessed using specific software. This makes communication over HTTP, such as via public Wi-Fi, for example, an insecure and highly vulnerable medium.

HTTPS, on the other hand, prevents websites from having their information intercepted by encrypting the data. As a result, even if someone succeeds in intercepting the information, it will come across strings of nonsensical characters, thus providing an advanced level of security.
